He explains the history in the liner notes for the album, I think. His original idea was something more gothic and "Steinmanian". It would be called "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and Patricia Knop (Whistle Down The Wind) co-wrote the screenplay with him. The movie we got in 2003 sounds nothing at all like Steinman's original vision.
