| Bat Out of Hell is, I'm sure most of us would agree, the ultimate high school album. Now, I'm not saying that it cannot be enjoyed outside of high school, that's preposterous, but that album speaks of the high school experience in a way that no other musical work has. It takes it seriously in a way that high school doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. It makes the first loves and sexual experiences and the isolation and the anger and the rage and the, yes, boredom of the whole experience into something grand and epic. It portrays high school in the same overblown fashion you believed it deserved whilst you were still there. This is one of the many reasons that album is so great. Now, here is my question: if Bat Out of Hell is the ultimate high school album (and if you disagree with that, I would love to hear your thoughts), then what do you believe Bat 2 is? Is it focused on obsession? Longing? I believe that it is an album that is about the missed opportunities of youth. The value of youth is spouted over and over throughout the album, often in a way that makes it seem like it possesses a richness that the singer will never again experience. Any thoughts? How have you guys thought of Bat 2? Anything different, any complete tangents? I'd love to hear anything and everything. | |
