I don't really altogether mind the challenges you guys give to me, to make me work to find proofs of this or that, but it really is very exhausting and strenuous. I find it worth it because of how much I respect and love Jim, and the music. As a vocalist of yore in my school years and subsequent shower performances, I realize how important it is. I realize also, that it takes alot of minute descriptions and samples to put one against the other and differentiate them. I've been dealing with this issue for what now, six weeks? And that is alot. But each time it comes up, I get closer to showing you what you would accept. Now that I have finally found a solo vocal performance of Rory, which I told you I would search for, I am able to discuss what is similar as well as different between Rory's voice and Jim's. One example I hope I might be able to draw upon is something Jim said in his blog about the piano sharing between himself and Steve Margoshes on Graveyard Shift, when that gem was delivered to us in the summertime. While one is piano, and the example I wish to expound upon is actually a vocal, I hope that you may accept the principle as the same. Sharing a vocal....and the tune I select in this is the much confused performance of "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste". It is wonderful to be able hear Rory's voice by itself, on that stage performance as original cast on "Grail". His voice is so splendid. I agree that his acclaim is well earned. Even in the twenty seconds, of two songs each ten seconds of length in the sample, one called "Once You Believed" and the other called "What A Castle". The feeling has been like finding that rarest of gumballs at the candy store and running home to try it out, like I never had a gumball before. I toggled between Rory's sample and the other songs in which Rory performs. It is much clearer not just what I have been saying, but what I need to say. Rory sings the highest notes on A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste, at the very beginning....then Jim takes up the vocal at the first word. I do believe that Jim and Rory could be related. I have not met Rory, and I know that Jim has taken some of his cousins under his wing. There is the vocal resemblance between this pair, but also when placed side by side, a facial resemblance as well. It is not too far flung a speculation to maintain for the time being. Maybe Jim told me, I am having such impression, but I do not have a clear quote to offer. I'd quote if I could. There are alot of things he told me to confuse me on this in fact, so that I would have to do the work. He likes doing stuff like that. But Jim did discuss the difference between the voices, and that is something that I shall try to recapture even as I cannot quote it. One has to have a cooperative spirit to listen to what I am asking that you listen to, if you would let yourself be flexible. The world won't collapse if you try. Jim's voice and Rory's voice have one difference between them: the lower timbre is less in Rory's voice than in Jim's. Jim reflects the baritone tonation in all of his singing, even when on the high notes, and Rory reflects the high tenor tonation in all his singing. One could listen to the higher voice, versus the lower voice, even as they have similar voices as such, and even as they are at similar notes. Rory can and does reach with greater dimension the higher notes, and Jim can reach the higher notes with a resonance of a baritone. It is like having the loudness button on in your stereo. Jim's voice has the loudness on, and Rory's voice has the loudness off, to make this analogy. The difference, is in the bass, low tone as a sub-tone to the vocal. They are similar, yes, there is no doubt about that. But, honestly, I would not spend hours listening to Rory sing, and I listen for hours to Jim. I know Jim's voice. I love his voice. Rory's voice is impressive, and there is no argument from me about that. http://rapidshare.com/files/34592743/amg.asx.html The download is the asx playlist which depends on internet connection to play. I don't have the ability to rip mp3 files from the net. But listen to Rory's solo. | |
