Statistically, cycles have a fatality/serious-injury rate about 25 times higher than automobiles on a per-mile-driven basis.
People used to argue that racing drivers were safer not wearing seat belts because they could be 'thrown clear of the wreck.' I don't believe anyone makes that argument any longer.
I'm not saying it's foolish to ride a bike – it isn't, in my opinion, but the probability is very significantly worse, and the particular problem is increased vulnerability to inattentive imbeciles driving larger vehicles – assuming the motorcyle operator is sober and competent.
