| I’ve been meaning to write and post this for a while now but just haven’t got round to it. Last year after the RAH gig I got caught up in the euphoria of the evening and when the 3 Bat tour was announced I bought a couple of tickets. Since then on many occasions after seeing various Meat clips and TV appearances I though I had made a big mistake and contemplated selling the tickets on E-bay. There were two reasons for this. The first I thought he sounded crap the Royal variety performance I think was the first time I had ever seen him and cringed. The second reason, after watching the Royal variety I thought he looked so crap almost as if he was about to keel over. Sure in my own selfish way I was pissed at him for doing Bat 3 the way he did you see this was my legacy as well. This music has been my life for nearly 30 years now how could he not consider what the implications of doing a Bat Album with out Jim would mean to people like me. Ok I’m being a tad melodramatic but you get the point. But all this aside I would rather he quit than to keel over and die in the middle of a performance. But I started to think imagine if he did how dramatic would that be lets face it regardless of anything he still puts a lot of energy into his performances, the songs are all epics not a 3 minute tune amongst them, shit Bad for good is what, god knows how many minutes of continuous singing. Then there is Bat out of hell try singing that with no emotion or energy. And he is overweight. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to see him kick the bucket on stage but I also wouldn’t want to miss it if he did. So that swung it to the concert at Wembley I would go, no great expectations. But then I started to think I am probably one of the few who has seen Meat in the 70’s, 80’s, 90,s and what ever you call it now 00’s or something. And I started to think how much over the years his performances have changed. Then I started to think of the reasons why they have changed so much. And then I started to appreciate a few things. Let’s face it he is 30 years older, shite I’m 30 years older there are things I can’t do as well as I could. Oh sure before you say it there are other old farts out there singing still, The Stones, The Who, Elton John, Bowie, to name a few. Now I haven’t seen all of them live but you can’t tell me that they sing high octane songs each 30 minutes long. Ok slight exaggeration but you get the point. Then I started to think where and who can I go to see that is going to sing 10 or more Steinman songs. There is no one. So in the worse case scenario I would be able to sing at the top of my voice some great if not most of the greatest Steinman tunes not having to worry about the neighbours thinking an animal was dying. So the show started I concentrated and with my untrained musical ear I was determine to pick up on any lip-syncing but I couldn’t tell. Oh I’m sure there were moments but you see at the end of the day it doesn’t really mater. What I was subjected to is something Meat Loaf can do which very few artists can he can perform and put on a hell of a show. Sure the voice isn’t what it used to be. Sure he isn’t doing forward rolls across the stage like he used to. But what he is still capable of doing is working an audience and entertain that audience. And that along with hearing various Steinman songs was well worth the price of the admission Now on a second note unless my memory and powers of concentration or even a mental block of some sorts the only non Steinman song that was sung was Blind as a bat apart from the intro to the second half when the band sung Alive. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong) Now personally maybe im reading to much into this but I kind of take that as an admission that he feels the non Steinman songs just aren’t up to it as it s a bit quick to drop the song that’s the title of the current album. This is just my humble opinion. But maybe just maybe he actually realises what a mistake it was to do this album without Jim? | |
