Another ALW musical bites the dust.

Read on BBC that Stephen Ward, ALW's latest musical is closing after only a few months run.

Now I don't know much about the story and haven't seen the show but I listened to some of the songs on Spotify and it's pretty God awful in my opinion. The opening sounds like a typical musical filler rather than a grand theme to get things going. Disgusting I think.

In contrast. I saw Wicked on Saturday and my goodness is that one hell of a musical! I can understand the hype. So much spectacle and great music and super singers. The first half lasts a good 1 1/2 hours without it ever getting boring. The second half which I didn't thought was as good was still superb really and it ends really well.

I would put that along with Les Mis, Evita and Lion King as my favourite musicals.

Still all this stuff and after the somewhat lacklustre Whistle makes me think that Steinman could have done an amazing Batman. I think the time is ripe for one after the Nolan movies success.

Although a Bat musical I would definitely would want to see I simply can't see it making as much of an impact as an official Batman musical. But what do I know?

It certainly seems to me that going by ALW's recent failures that just having a good writer or a good concept alone is no key to success in the musical world. I think Wicked shows you need to include a lot to really stand a chance (spectacle / good music which includes a grand opening and a super song to end Act 1 / great costumes / inclusion of love stories / inclusion of death etc). All these formulas exist in Les Mis, Evita and Lion King. I think the guys who made Wicked have the appeal towards children covered really well too which I would have thought Batman would have automatically. Bat I'm not so sure about. :-/
