I am guessing that in being "amazed" at what the USA can do is due to (what may be) your very young age. The USA has participated in several despicable acts over the past 200 years starting with the genocide perpetrated on the American Indians. Sadly, Saddam was an ally of political sorts. It was because of what happened in Iran to the 52 hostages and the neutering of the USA Public Personna that drove the US to aid anyone who would take on the hated Persians. Politics is a more ugly spectator sport than bull fighting.
With Saddam now just a bad dream, perhaps the mess in Iraq will get straightened out but I won't hold my breath. And Pudding, I'm with you. In this case, however, the death penalty was too good for that monster.
