| Again, I feel like I should be able to find an explanation for this somewhere online but after a bit of searching nothing comes up? What's the story on Is Nothing Sacred? Specifically--why are the lyrics by Don Black? The only real Black connection to Steinman I know is that in the recent slightly "sanitized/family-ized" version of Whistle Down the Wind, Black wrote a new song with Lloyd Webber "The Gang" to replace Annie/Charlie Christmas (something that doesn't please me...) Otherwise, as a huge theatre fag I know Black mainly from his musical theatre work--speficially (and I feel kinda bad saying this but...) that as a dramatic lyricist he's mediocre to downright terrible, although I do like some of his James Bond pop songs, Diamonds being a classic to my mind. Theatre wise I think his work has been decent--Tell me on a Sunday has some moving and clever lyrics and he's certainly more talented than the other major ALW collaborator of that era, Charles Hart. I am an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan (something that doesn't always go over with other theatre snobs I know) but it seems that often he would go out of his way to pick lesser lyricists who he would have complete control over--probably nto a fair statement but... Aspect sof Love is perhaps my favorite Webber score but it has some truly clunky and awkward lyrics--and Black's work translating one of my fave French pop musicals, Romeo and Juliette is utterly and completely embarassing, almost as if he wasn't trying... So after that rant--what's the history of Sacred (for the record I think the lyrics ofr it are actually quite good) *hoping not to get too many flames...* E | |
