Total Eclipse is soooooo not depressing to me, and never has been. It has lifted my spirits in more times and more ways than I could ever count, and it was an inspiration when I was thinking not of the lonely feelings but of the love that is expressed in the lyrics, indeed the acceptance and the longing, where it is clear that there are forces beyond the others' control as to why there is that separation, and not a situation where one lets the other down, as that would be contradictory.

As for depressing songs, the two songs that come most to mind as depressing are Still The Children ala Jim, and The Future Ain't What It Used To Be. But at least for me, there are other highly valued qualities to them.
