I know what a depressing song sounds like. The reason why “Total Eclipse” is so depressing is because it holds the most depressing line ever to be written:
“Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by”
Everyone can relate to that line, and their first reaction would be “My god that line is so true and depressing”
As a young lad I’d actually rephrase that line:
“Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years ARE going by”
That line is depressing of course it is, not only does it actually make a lot of sense, it actually makes you think about growing old, and that you’ll never stay young forever. It seems strange that Jim would put that line in a song, it doesn’t sound like his way of thinking.
