And religion gave humanity a good reason to use them. Let's not forget, religion was invented by humans too. Mostly to keep the lower folks in check and some minority in power.
If science will not bring us a solution to leave this solar system in the future, we're fucked anyway once the sun goes nova. Unless of course some nice asteroid hits us before that or some other cosmic catastrophe happens.
Also I wouldn't call it poisoned ego, if humans would have been pacifists from the start, we'd likely have died out ages ago. Certainly we would have no real technology worth speaking of.
