That piece crops up all over the place, from my memory. It's the OVERTURE to "The Confidence Man" and the beginning of "Something Of This Masquerade May Follow", then the 1981 "More Than You Deserve", it's not in the original demo. You can sort'a hear something like it in the riff to "Rebel Without A Clue", and it's definitely on the beginning of "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be" which has all sorts of older Steinman songs; The "Surf's Up", of course, and the piano transition between the end of the loud chorus/and final verses of "For Crying Out Loud". Here are some other ones, and they freaked me out because I'd never even noticed them until they were pointed out. The riff to "Song Of The City Of Hope" from MTYD more basically becomes the riff to "Lost Boys And Golden Girls"; the middle section of "Mother River Song", from TDE, reappears in "Dark Night Of The Soul" in Garbo, along with the "Nocturnally Yours" riff (from TCM) which appears at the climax of the same song. The first 2 opening lines of "Surf's Up" are the same as the first 2 opening lines of "Objects", musically, and the end of "Confession Of A Vampire" is reminiscent of the last bit in "I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back". Jim's "Come With Me" progression (which dates back to 1966 according to the Copyright information on the DOTV demo) appears the most out of all Steinman's pieces. I can see why he's so proud of it. Then you have "And I wanna take you out of the frying pan, out of the frying pan, out of the frying pan, and INTO THE FIRE." Which, when slowed down, you get "And I would do anything for love, I would do anything for love, I would do anything for love BUT I WON'T DO THAT." Which was probably not intentional. Baring in mind that I've heard none of the older stuff in Steinman's latest material. "Body" borders on becoming parts of "Safe Sex" and "Not Allowed To Love" slightly SLIGHTLY resembles "A Good Nightmare Comes So Rarely" but that's it really. The intro to WH's "Break It" is reminiscent of the BAT 2 version intro of "Lemon". It's also interesting how the dynamics and structure of "Original Sin" and "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste", Whistle version, are both similar. Then they finish off with a "We Will Rock You" tribute and a slow finale. I used to think that that was proof enough that Steinman had a hand in that melody. | |
