The problem HERE (as in not the US, centre of the universe) is that crimes with weapons involved happen with illegal weapons. So even if guns and knives (oh, how I would love to see people eat meat without a knife because they're outlawed) would be forbidden, people would still get shot or stabbed.
If you really want to kill someone, you can easily make yourself a weapon. It might not be as efficient as a gun, but it will get the job done.
In the UK privately owned guns are outlawed IIRC, they still have more than enough murders. With guns.
In the US it's just ridiculously easy compared to other countries to access guns.
As for laws not applying for certain people, I'd say 99% of the politicians think that laws they pass do not apply to them, be they right-wing or left-wing. The majority of them are just interested in stuffing their own pockets.
