I'm inclined to agree with Smeg, but you could be correct in terms of the big picture. I'm not 100% sure. I resist gun control because it unreasonably sacrifices the basic self-defense rights of individuals -- particularly poor individuals -- in order to reduce overall crime statistics. The police may not be able to protect a hypothetical single woman in East Los Angeles, for instance, from her roided-out, crazy ex-boyfriend. I can't ask her to rely exclusively on the police to defend herself and her children in times of crisis when I know the government struggles and often fails to protect against violence. Remember, I don't even like forcing them to rely on the post office for mail delivery! Reducing overall gun violence is a noble end, but it is contrary to our system of individual rights to force the woman to forgo her right to defend herself with a handgun in order to achieve that reduction. I thought the narrative that started this thread was great, BTW. -=John Galt=- > There will always be evidence to support one side of the > argument or the other, some of it twisted beyond all > recognition to try and justify a point. > > I have absolutely nothing against people having guns for > sport or hunting, but allowing citizens to carry personal > firearms is something that I'll never agree with, unless > they're a Police officer or member of some security > services. > > I don't have the answer in how to stop gun crime but I'm > fairly certain arming citizens isn't the way. > > | |
