| My two favorite lyricists are Steinman and Springsteen, and I find it hard to put one above the other, as they are so different. I have favorite lines from each of them. Jim seems to have a natural ease, where sometimes Bruce's words seem forced. Jim seems to laugh at himself; he has a tendency to not be serious even when he is (if that makes sense; he kind of "hides" the real emotion in the words). Bruce wears his heart on his sleeve. Jim is the master of the clever phrase. Many of Bruce's songs have a "cinematic" quality- they have stories and characters. Springsteen uses tons of names (Mary, Janey, Billy, Wendy); Jim hardly uses any. Regardless, I love them both! ;0) | |
