It’s interesting you should say this because, and I don’t know whether you know this or not, “Whistle down the Wind” was originally supposed to be a film. Patricia Knop was brought in as the writer because she was a Hollywood screenwriter who’d worked on a number of films such as “9½ Weeks”. Actually, I believe she was involved with Jim on the adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” in its early stages. Remember that, at this point, Andrew Lloyd Webber was trying to make a mark in Hollywood and “Evita” and “The Phantom of the Opera” were coming together. At the same time, according to the Bat 2 press, Jim was trying to develop “Bat out of Hell” and “Pandora’s Box” as movies. Steven Spielberg was apparently going to direct, according to the 2007 interviews with Jim, and Johnny Depp and Kirsten Dunst were being courted for the leads. Now, for the life of me, I can’t remember where I first heard this. It could be on this website. It could be in one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s biographies. It could be in the Hal Prince biography. But, anyway, the screenplay was tried out at the Sydmonton Festival in 1995 and, for some reason, the movie didn’t happen and it was a stage-show instead. This is probably why the critics complained about the Washington D.C. production being a little choppy because obviously they hadn’t finished translating the screenplay into a musical libretto? I’m soooo sorry if you know all this. > ALW once mentioned back in early 2000's that he was gonna > film all of his musicals (eventually), and I think he then > started by doing an update of JCS. > > To keep it cheaper (than a big studio pic), think a TV > production of WDTW would work great as a family film with > 'edge' (maybe in conjunction with SKY or ITV at Easter or > Christmas), and it's about time the Hayley Mills original > was updated? > > I think they would have to cut some of the songs, but this > would hopefully allow Jim/ALW to write something new (just > to bring a new perspective). > > One of my favourite lines from the show is 'No-one's ever > looked at me, the way you're looking at me now', and I > think they could write a great love song using this as the > title?
