| What to make of the Evening Standard Ad? First off it’s good to see/read something about the musical, even though it’s still (deliberately?) vague. I think they could/should have mentioned the theatre and opening (month/year) or even something like ‘opening in the West End 2010’ (just to reinforce what they were advertising)? I also assume by using the Standard that London is still the city of choice for launching the show (as opposed to Broadway or an ‘out of town’ try-out somewhere)? And why now? Maybe tickets will go on sale shortly, in the run-up to Christmas, with a view to a 2010 opening? I liked the use of red, which is quite striking, and must have caught a lot of people’s attention, and also the fact that they mention Jim was the sole writer on Bat 1 (which many people probably still don’t know), but I think they should have added a pic of him as well? In regards the artwork, don’t know whether using part of the Bat 1 cover is to give people something they may recognise or the final design? If it is the final artwork then disappointed as it doesn’t show much imagination and the design/execution is poor (the ‘Jim Steinman’ font is horrible)? I actually envisaged using just the Bat & steeple from the cover (honest), but in my (rough) sketch the Bat was turned to be full on (as if about to fly off the steeple directly at you) and a more exaggerated ‘primal scream’. The wings would be outstretched with a tattooed ‘Bat’ on one wing, ‘Hell’ on the other wing and a branded ‘Out Of’ across the Bat’s chest (slightly smoking, as if just been branded). The wings would also be dripping blood (off course). I also have an angelic Wendy strapped to the steeple, which is rising from the ‘fires of hell’ (aspects of the Bat 2 cover thrown in), and a deep red/orange background (similar to the WDTW poster). The website link is a bit of a ‘damp squib’ (at the moment). By giving the address on the ad they should have rewarded people, bothering to have a look, with at least an up-to-date biog on Jim and a couple of pics, or maybe even Jim doing some type of voice-over about the show 'Hi this is Jim Steinman, and my new Bat Out of Hell musical spectaclular...blah blah blah'. The ad also mentions ‘experience the music like never before’ so why not have a NEW ‘teaser’ backing track (with or without vocal) playing in the background (Jim/Rink should have at least some rough mixes by now?) Overall the ad seems to have been a bit of a rush job & irritatingly vague, and the designers/producers need a slap! (LoL). BTW – A very belated Happy Birthday to Jim. Never ever stop writing!! | |
