| Yeah, it really has been the decade from hell, hasn’t it? George W. Bush for President, September 11 World Trade Center bombings, 2 wars, the tsunamis, the rise of Reality TV, the worst decade of pop music ever even worse than the 90s, the worst decade for musical theatre ever with shows like "The Producers", "Wicked" and "Spamalot" being the only real spectacular hits of the decade... And the worst decade ever for Jim with the cancellation of the "Batman" musical, the gigantic flaming piece of crap that was "Dance of the Vampires" on Broadway, "Garbo" flopping in Sweden at the same time, the anti-climactic "Wuthering Heights" with the worst Steinman song ever being the only new track, Meat Loaf's abomination "The Monster is Loose" preceded by one of his biggest flops since "Blind Before I Stop", Iron Mountain losing the original masters for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "The Dream Engine" project going nowhere fast... Moving along, Queen produced that abomination album with Paul Rodgers, Disney actually stopped producing traditional hand-drawn animated features for a while, instead mimicking DreamWorks with their "Shrek" and "Madagascar" franchises, Andrew Lloyd Webber composing some of his least interesting and least popular scores ever "The Beautiful Game" and "The Woman in White", "By Jeeves" and "The Woman in White" being his only Broadway outings in the decade and both of them closed within months, the industrious Frank Wildhorn only one had show on Broadway which the producers walked away from after the reviews and after it closed Frank was practically banished to Continental Europe, no new musicals from Sondheim with the exception of the meager (not technically new) New York producers of "The Frogs" and "Road Show", Julie Taymor actually working on a "Spider-Man" musical that’s supposed to have triple the budget of "Dance of the Vampires", sheesh. I could go on and on... For me, it’s been a decade I will always remember, wonderful and exciting at times and terrible and scary. 2007 was the worst year out of all of them but 2008 and 2009 were full and I will always remember those years forever. Happy New Decade, Ryan. | |
