| Does everyone agree that The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film? I would be interested to hear from any Star Wars fans like Ryan. The following is the obituary of the director, who sadly died today. "Irvin Kershner, director of the best-loved Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, has died aged 87. It's reported that the filmmaker died at his home following a long illness. Taking over from George Lucas to make the sequel to the mega-hit Star Wars, Kershner crafted a film that felt far more grown-up and fully realized than its predecessor, setting a standard for sci-fi and adventure films that carries on to this day. Kershner's career also included a Bond film, 1983's "unofficial" Bond sequel/remake Never Say Never Again, and another less acclaimed sequel, Robocop II. Though he retired from directing in 1993, he was recently back on a publicity tour to help promote the new 30th anniversary book, The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. A student of photography, Kershner began his directorial career in 1958 with the Roger Corman-produced 'Stakeout on Dope Street.' After much TV work, he directed 1978's 'Eyes of Laura Mars' before being invited by George Lucas to helm 'Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.' After initially refusing the offer, Kershner asked Lucas why he was the choice, to which Lucas reportedly replied, "Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you're not Hollywood." An unsurprising box-office success, 'Empire' faced a mixed critical reaction, but would later be regarded by most as the best film in the series. Shaun of the Dead star and Star Wars fans, Simon Pegg, simply had this to say on his Twitter page: 'RIP Irvin Kershner director of The Empire Strikes Back. For me, yours was the best of all.'" | |
