I agree. I don't think Heathcliff has been produced without Cliff in it. Although I am not sure. It did feature lyrics by Tim Rice. Heathcliff is a fairly dark character. Like with his song Devil Woman, I think it proves that there is another side to Cliff. Jim was actually positive about him having a go at RARDCT. He even offered to change it so that it was more suitable for Cliff. This was several years ago now, so I have no idea if Jim would still be interested. Cliff was positive but his manager delayed and delayed. Cliff's manager agreed with you, that RARDCT is not suitable for Cliff. But the manager is a friend and they are still trying to change his mind. There is still a possibility, even though Jim has probably forgotten about it by now. One has to remember that Cliff has sold more singles in the UK than The Beatles or Elvis and he was certainly rock and roll when he first became famous. That might make him attractive to Jim but it also might make his manager more guarded about Cliff's new projects. > So unless cliff was in the BOOH musical then its not > really a draw point for his fans.. No, it's just that it might give Jim and Cliff a singles hit. > You are right though that if cliff did record a song it > may well be a hit due to the size his loyal fanbase and it > would give the show some publicity but would that > translate into ticket sales? ALW and Cliff released a single from Phantom (which Jim almost wrote the lyrics for) and that was great publicity for the show, even though Cliff was not in the show. It's interesting that Jim and Cliff have sometimes worked with the same people. Some would say that Cliff isn't hard enough for Jim but what about Air Supply and Barry Manilow? > Those of us who were born before BOOH came out and have > lived with it for our whole lives don't need to be sold > the idea as much as people who were born post 1990. Yes. This is true. I loved Meat Loaf when they first played the BOOH song film on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Nobody knew who Meat was and then suddenly the record shops are inundated with requests. Then Meat and Karla perform Paradise live on the same show a while later and the rest is history. Gosh. Karla was very popular at boarding school. However, trying to sell a musical that does not involve Meat Loaf will not be easy and they will need all the help that they can get to sell "Jim Steinman's Bat Out Of Hell". Fortunately, Jim the great writer appeals to many different types of people. I have no doubt that people who like Cliff might also like Jim. But, as you point out, the young need to be sold on Jim's music. Any suggestions? It would be difficult to get Justin Bieber or One Direction to record For Crying Out Loud. But maybe. Thanks for an interesting conversation. | |
