EXACTLY!
If this was the intial motive, then he could have killed the couple in many ways, and at any time.
The fact that he was obviously deranged at the time, AND had several guns on him, have made the subsequent killings, so much easier, spontaneous & detached.
If he had 'lost his marbles' after the first killings, I doubt whether he could have gone on and killed so many more, and so easily, if he didn't have a gun.
