I understand your skepticism, but I disagree with your conclusion and the underlying premise that Jim should or can only write a good song or two every few years and then hoard those songs for only the most deserving and ideal projects. I'm not sure I'm ready to accept that. I would be happy if Jim spent a little more time writing and pitching great songs to all sorts of recording projects and a little less time watching horror movies.

That general thought having been said, I think Jim should do the Bonnie project, in particular, and contribute a couple of new singles for a couple of good reasons.

First, country music is less fickle, less age-sensitive, and more dependable then pop-rock. Twenty and thirty year-old acts seem to only grow stronger in the environment. It's a move that Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, and a slew of the best acts, songwriters, and producers are making or have made. Why should Jim try to win a popularity contest with teenagers when many of the same folks who bought Bat Out of Hell when it came out are waiting for him in the pop-country aisles.

Second, modern pop-country is a genre closer to the Steinman sound than anything else being played or sold in volume in the US markets. It's frequently bombastic, character-driven, and very over-the-top -- I'm not sure how many times I've heard cliches, lines, and titles lifted from Steinman songs in new country tunes, but it's not rare. It's A&R crowd understand that they are serving the market that bought the hair bands of the 80s. If you are going to be a power ballad writer-producer these days, you kind of need to be in this genre.

Third, we've been reading and learning about Bat Out of Hell the Musical in one form or another for decades. Musical theater is a great retirement... if you get points off the house's gross take and if the show is successful. But, who cares? Musical theater is inaccessible for most of us, cost-prohibitive, and testosterone-deficient. New studio recordings of new Steinman songs should be what Steinmaniacs are screaming for instead of a bloated cirque-de-solei style tourist trap in London.

Finally, I could care less whether Meat Loaf or Bonnie Tyler are at their prime in terms of their vocals. Britney Spears has a hit single! Reba McEntire has a hit single! I'd just like to be able to go to the record store and buy a new Steinman song. If the recording isn't perfect, I won't feel too bad because I know it will be covered ad naseum anyway.
