| For those who've seen this.... I recall "High Tension" being bandied around maybe a year ago when Jim was blogging regularly, and the subject of Horror films came up. I believe this film was positively reviewed, so I finally made the effort to watch last weekend. I think I also recalled reading that there was a "twist" ending, so I sort of expected it, except half-way through I thought "Well, that can't possibly right, because there's clearly a killer who is NOT the lesbian girl." Lo and behold, the lesbian IS the killer, and, as far as I can tell, the entire movie is just the series events as the psycho lesbian BELIEVES they happened. (except for the parts at the end when the POV starts jumping back and forth between what's happening in the lesbian's mind and what's actually happening. But hey, consistency is over-rated, anyway.) My question is this: Does an ending count as a "twist" when the film-maker has shown you a falsehood the entire time? I think that's a fairly cheap trick, really. I'm no Night Shyamalan fan, but to me "The Sixth Sense" is a perfect example of a true twist ending; something that is right in front of you the whole time, yet constructed to keep you from noticing, not unlike a magician's use of slight-of hand. If you just show me an apple for 90 minutes, then jump-cut to an orange (even an orange in a straight-jacket), I don't think its accurate to shout "Ha! Fooled you! Had you going, mother fucker." Also, what do you suppose actually happened: did the lesbian actually arrive at the farm house with her friend, and thus the grimy-truck was a fabrication, or did she drive herself there in the truck? I'm thinking she came in the truck, since she did produce that giant roto-saw at the end, which she probably didn't pull out of her ass. Anyway, it was definitely a tense movie to watch, but the ending sort of left me displeased, and wanting to call the film-maker for a 12 minute discussion. | |
