Well... # Charles Hart. The lyricist of the original "The Phantom Of The Opera" who, rightfully, should resume the reins here. Charles *did* return to write the lyrics for "Learn To Be Lonely" for the "Phantom" film. Not Richard Stilgoe because he was replaced on the original by Charles Hart. #2 Tim Rice. He was originally asked to write the lyrics but he turned it down because he was busy with "Chess" (probably one of the worst decisions of his career. Tim's version of "Memory" also escaped "Cats", literally, at the last minute) -- Alan Jay Lerner (My Fair Lady, Camelot) was also one of the candidates to write the lyrics for the original "Phantom" but he died before he could begin (which is a huge shame as he'd had a decade long list of flops and he deserved one last sucess.) #3 Frederick Forsyth. I don't know how involved he could be with this. Their history stems back to the early 70s when ALW composed the film score for "The Odessa File", based on a Forsyth novel. Forsyth isn't a lyricist or a playwright, as far as I know, but Ben Elton wasn't a lyricist either. Then again, IMO, Elton's lyrics on "Beautiful Game" sucked hideously #4 Jim Steinman. Simply because he almost got the chance to write the lyrics for the original. However, I don't think this is as much a golden opportunity as it seems. This is a huge risk for ALW. I, personally, don't want Jim associated with another enormous flop O/T let's pray they don't reunite Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman as the Phantom and Christine. | |
