You have a good memory. I did go to the box office (mainly because I was around the corner in the passport office). The two box office staff said they had heard the rumours but knew nothing else. This was back in May 2008.
On the subject of a venue for Bat musical, all the decent size theatres seemed tied up for at least the next 2-3 years (see link).
I've no idea how shows are doing but if I was to guess, I could see We Will Rock You getting to the 10 year mark and then freeing up the Dominion.
Also I cannot see Shrek lasting very long at Drury Lane, so this could be a great venue & location (also has the biggest stage in London, I think).
Who knows? If they are aiming to be up & running for Olympics 2012 (which you hinted at) then the choices are almost nil?
