I don't follow the 'lack of quality' argument behind the Wagner campaign, and I think there is an element to this that's lacking from the public discussion about the X Factor.

If it were about quality, then (and I'm referring particularly to Cowell and Walsh here) once the show is done, give the best contestants a recording contract anyway. No tears, no tantrums and no tragedies. If Cowell and co loved quality music more than the moolah, then The X Factor and its kin would be very, very different shows.

The X Factor is pure entertainment, the Colosseum but with less blood, it's a TV show; so Wagner's remaining on the show is actually for its benefit. If the whole thing is engineered as much as I personally believe it may be, then Wagner's remaining on the show ALSO makes them a tonne of money from the revenue from the phone vote.

Therefore, the Wagner campain, ironically or not, actually works in Cowell and co's favour.

It didn't escape my attention either that the Rage Against the Machine campaign of last year was organised by two former Sony employees and acquaintances of Cowell's, who's own SyCo label is a part of Sony.

If the public don't know this stuff, and it's not exactly secret, then their understanding of the situation is impaired. The con game relies on believing that there are two different 'sides' in this 'battle', whereas both 'sides' are the same coin. The only way not to get stung is to not play the game at all.

A harsh lesson learned by a Liberal Democrat voter ;)
