Jim Steinman? Never heard of the guy.

So… I didn’t know that Jim Steinman existed until several weeks ago while surfing the net for Meatloaf interviews. I’ve been a Meat fan for many years but I was only nine years old when Bat I came out so was not really paying much attention at the time.

And even though I know most performers often don’t write their own lyrics, I’d just assumed for whatever reason (interesting question) that Meat did. And that he at least played some role in writing the music.

Of course, since learning that Jim wrote all of the songs and lyrics to every one of my favorites, I’ve been shaking my head in disbelief. No question Jim is unbelievably talented…and funny…and even a bit demented as he himself admits. I'm in awe the more I learn about him and his body of work.

So I’ve been thinking… Certainly, there is no Meat without Jim but could Jim have found someone else who could have delivered the success?

The other question on my mind at the moment is whether Jim has a protégé? I’ve read several of your threads that discuss potential new collaborations, but who is waiting in the wings? Seriously, is there anyone else alive who can write an eight minute song where 1) you don’t realize eight minutes have gone by; and 2) you actually wish it kept on going so you listen again.

I realize that my post should be broken down into a few threads but I’m capable this evening only of a single brain dump as I continue to reel from my discovery.
