If he is missing those things from today's music, then he should stop listening to pop and venture elsewhere. There is plenty of good music around, well produced music, well sung music, varied, bombastic, grandious and soaring. But you will NOT find in on MTV, radio, casting shows or the major labels.
When I look over the albums I bought in the last few years, most of them come from Nuclear Blast.
