I don't think it's ripped off/influenced by, it's a bloody follow up, have you missed the point?
It's the story of what happened to Cody & McCoy years after the events in SOF, A SEQUEL, albeit produced by different people, what is that so strange, or have you TOTALLY missed the point.
For example ALL the Alien films had pretty much a different production team, or do you class all those sequels as a ripoff.
