I agree...I don't think Jim has ever written a 'concept' album, but then again a Steinman album doesn't have to be a 'concept'.

Jim is probably like most songwriters in that he writes & writes & writes with no projects (maybe Neverland vaguely at the back of his mind) or singers in mind. When a project or singer does come along he then sees what he has available to give them. I can't think of anytime where he has written specifically for a singer (apart from Took The Words for Meat).

Bat 1 in my opinion has very little to do with Neverland and/or Meat Loaf. Jim had 'Heaven Can Wait' (demoed by Bette Midler) & 'For Crying Out Loud' before he ever met the Loaf, and I doubt he had Neverland in mind when he wrote them.

He was inspired to write 'Took The Words' for Meat but I think that was it. 'Revved Up' is from Neverland (but in a diluted form), 'Bat' is inspired by Psycho and Jailhouse Rock, 2/3 is Jim trying to write a simple 'country' love song and 'Paradise' is something weird & wonderful (albeit from Meat's prompting).

Bat 2 was disappointing in that it took ages and went massively over budget, and yet only four new songs (at one point the record label was gonna release the album without Objects & Louder). Perhaps more Neverland elements in this album, but not devised/written as a concept.

Both Bat albums are just collections of songs that Jim cobbled together from whatever he had available. No great concept thread, just songs on albums (to me).

His most original (& cohesive) albums are BFG & Deadringer, and I listen to these way more than the Bat albums. If anything comes close to a Neverland concept, then it is probably the BFG album.

I think we could all compile a great Neverland concept album from the stuff Jim has written, and hopefully that is what he is doing with the 'Bat' musical.

How about the next 'Merciless Night' album is a 'Neverland' concept?

I'm a bit more optimistic that Jim has written some new stuff since his health problems. There's nothing stopping him writing lyrics (Devil's Playground anyone), and even if his piano playing is limited nowadays, I'm sure he can at least compose melodies.

I still think 'Body...' was written after his health issues (maybe 2004), unless anyone knows different?
