It's just that Sissy Spacek as Carrie is so iconic. That role has guaranteed her a place in popular culture. I have heard that Stephen King has complained about the film versions of many of his novels. He hated The Shining. Despite the fact that it was a Stanley Kubrick film which starred Jack Nicholson. Partly because Jack Nicholson was more comic than scary and partly because Kubrick was more interested in artistic photography than he was in the horror elements of the story. Despite The Shining getting five star reviews and despite it having legions of fans, King remade it as a TV movie which was closer to his novel. I am not sure how different Carrie is from the novel. Do you know? I haven't read the novel for thirty years. I know that Brian De Palma changed the name of Carrie's school to The Bates High School as a tribute to his favourite film Psycho. Also, both Carrie and her mother were more ugly in that novel. I do think that De Palma really captured the sick relationship between mother and daughter and that makes the school gym fires scene more believeable after Carrie is pranked with the pig's blood. How much more could the poor girl take?
