Pud,

You sound like a kid arguing with his parents that he shouldn't have to go to Sunday school. Don't worry, I won't make you go. But the Bible is, in whole or in part, a big, big part of the Judeo-Christian experience for millions of people around the globe. It's also difficult or impossible to fully participate in western culture without seeing its influence everywhere from moral philosophy to literature; in an example that might mean something to you, I've even heard the term "Christ Figure" bandied about in Harry Potter book reviews. :)

I understand that you can point out that like any powerful text or religion, there are some horror stories to remind us that Christianity does not promise or deliver heaven here on earth. Fighting wars over Harry Potter would be rediculous because it's just entertainment -- the Bible has real impact, for good or evil. I've seen it greatly enrich people's lives, offer an anecdote to addiction, and provide a unifying tie for people of different backgrounds and perspectives. I've also grown to appreciate the role the Bible and Christianity played in taking down communism.

Even the folks who revel in the idea that they, in their superiority, know the real secular Truth get some self-congratulatory benefit from the book -- and 99% of the time those folks have never read the Bible -- they've just chosen to go with the modernist trend because it crowns them as the smart people.

Let me just say a quick word about fanatical loonies. For those who read the Bible and the New Testament in particular, it will remain one of greatest and most passionate rallying cries for tolerance around. The typical person who hasn't read the Bible answers this by congratulating themselves because they are educated about "homophobia" or a history of wars. Have you ever noticed that at least a quarter of the time someone uses the term "homophobia" the conversation inevitably turns towards intolerant bashing of the "ignorant" "lifestyle choice" people make to live as Christians? The history of wars is not consistent with a fair reading of the Bible -- in other words, the Bible was not a cause of war, but an excuse to fight wars and commit atrocities by humans who are crippled by the very same kind of evil that the Bible strives to save us from. The Bible does everything it can not to depict Jesus as a general. There's no way these secularists could have actually read the book and come away saying that the book is the cause of people lynching gays in Wisconsin or fighting wars in the middle east.

The Bible remains a great book even if the fanatical secularists remain intent on blaming every human weakness on it and overlooking every good that has come from it.
