There may be a little dust on the cover of the Bible, but it is far more relevant and meaningful today than the Harry Potter books. With most translations, I think its also a far better read. Don't get me wrong, I love to see children and adults interested by books and reading, I just wish the books weren't so preachy in such a modern and shallow way. Rowling's comment may or may not be consistent with the text, but it's certainly consistent to allow whatever skill she may or may not possess to be trampled by her boring desire to engage in humanistic moralizing. But, my unpopular literary opinion isn't why I posted. I wanted to share that I actually thought that Rowling was kidding about the take that some fundamentalists had on Dumbledore when she made her recent comments. I distinctly remember some personality, probably a born-again, arguing that one of the characters was suggestively homosexual -- a comment that secular modernists denounced immediately as homophobic and wrong-headed. It reminded me of the purple power ranger phenomenon. Most fundamentalists could care less about trendy stuff like Harry Potter if it's not aimed at children, but if they did stop yawning and start reacting, they might just say: "I told you so! See, the guy was gay!" When they point it out, it's evil and stupid, but when Rowling does the same thing, it's brilliant and obvious. -=John Galt=- Maybe the fundamentalist response will be simply to say, "Looks like we were correct all along..." | |
